My passion for empowering women in business stems from a series of personal experiences that shaped my journey, especially within the jewellery industry. One pivotal moment occurred early in my career when I was appointed Vice President at a reputed company. On the very first day of my role, I encountered a situation that would profoundly impact my professional life.

A senior designer in the company refused to work under me simply because I was a woman. Instead of discussing the issue, the company quickly agreed with him and created a new department for him, despite his role being directly linked to mine. What baffled me further was that the company, which had an American base, didn't try to convince him to give the arrangement a chance. They blindly agreed to his demands, which felt incredibly disrespectful to me as a woman professional.

This incident became a turning point. It fueled my determination to raise the bar—not just for myself, but for all women. I wanted to prove that women can lead, succeed, and command respect in any industry. This is why I decided to pivot my career, transitioning from a corporate role to becoming a consultant dedicated to promoting and empowering women entrepreneurs.

In my work with women entrepreneurs, I noticed a common theme. While women were doing everything to build and grow their businesses, one crucial area often remained out of their hands—financial decisions. More often than not, husbands, fathers, or brothers controlled the financial aspect of their ventures. This reality prompted me to dig deeper and understand why.

I realized that many women entrepreneurs lacked the confidence to make financial decisions, and a major reason for this was the lack of formal financial education and training. We were never taught how to manage money or make informed financial choices, and this gap led to a lack of confidence in navigating the financial landscape of business.

This realization sparked my mission: with the right training, women can master financial management and own their business decisions just as confidently as men. My inspiration comes from champions like Mary Kom, who broke barriers in a male-dominated sport through hard work and the right training. Similarly, with the right support and training, women can excel in the business world, overcoming the financial challenges that have historically held us back.

At Business Sakhi, we aim to create an environment where women not only run businesses but run them with confidence, autonomy, and financial control. Our programs are designed to equip women with the knowledge and tools they need to take charge of their finances and transform their businesses into thriving, sustainable ventures.

The seed for Business Sakhi was sown during my childhood summers in a small village in Uttar Pradesh. Back then, business wasn’t about aggressive competition or mindless expansion—it was about fulfilling a need within the community.

Every household had something valuable to offer. The tel-wala kaka sold only oil, the tobacco seller stocked just hookah supplies, and my own family, being farmers, exchanged grains for essentials. This barter system was more than a means of trade; it was a way of life—one built on trust, expertise, and mutual respect.

That simplicity, where business was a way to serve and sustain, stayed with me. Business Sakhi is my attempt to bring that philosophy into today’s entrepreneurial world—where businesses focus not just on profits but on purpose, where women entrepreneurs build sustainable, need-based enterprises that truly make a difference.

Another deeply rooted influence that shaped Business Sakhi came from the incredible sense of community I witnessed in my village. In those days, a wedding wasn't just a family celebration—it was a village affair. Everyone contributed what they had, whether it was grains, wedding supplies, or simply their time and effort.

I recall attending my cousin's wedding and being struck by the warmth of it all. While the men stayed in the janwasa, we women were welcomed into the home of a local family who treated us not just as guests, but as part of their own. Similarly, my father and his elder brother were hosted in another house, where they were treated with the same care and respect, as though they were family.

This sense of giving without expecting anything in return, of coming together to support one another, is what truly inspired Business Sakhi. At its core, this business is about fostering a community where women entrepreneurs can feel supported, uplifted, and valued. It's about creating businesses that don’t just operate in isolation, but thrive through collaboration, shared knowledge, and collective growth.
